When you close your eyes and imagine the interior of your new custom home, what do you see? Stumped? Well, here’s some inspiration. We read up on 2019 home trends and design elements that are becoming increasingly popular.

Please don’t consider all of this an endorsement of these design ideas. We’re not interior decorators.

We just want to encourage you to think beyond architectural design and start imagining what life inside your new home might look like. Here are 10 trends to consider.

1. Sustainability and Artisanal Accessories

Sustainability is a popular concept that goes beyond environment-friendly materials. It’s also about sustaining the artisan economy by cultivating an appreciation for unique craftsmanship in the home.

Adding an artisanal touch could look like anything from artisan lighting fixtures to shower handles to hand-woven chairs. And those touches are definitely trendy.

2. A Touch of Nature

This trend is closely related to sustainability, but it’s more about incorporating the beauty of the natural world into the home.

Lots of potted greenery inside and just outside the patio doors and natural wood floors are popular. So is furniture that evokes the natural world, like coffee tables cut from stone or a broad tree trunk.

3. Bold Patterns in the Kitchen

Many homeowners are choosing to spice up their kitchens with graphic patterns. The more muted, monochromatic style meant to all other features to dominate is giving way to backsplashes that actively draw the eye.

Tiles that feature intricate yet clean designs seem to be very much in style in 2019.

4. Bold Colors

Safe, neutral colors you can accent with temporary items like throw pillows and floral arrangements still make sense to a lot of homeowners. But there’s a trend toward bold, permanent colors.

People are starting to select walls and large pieces of furniture that feature hunter greens, burnt yellow and shades of pink. So this seems like a good year to dare to step outside of whites and off-whites.

5. Terrazzo

This durable mixture of granite, marble, glass or quartz chips suspended in polished cement is a flooring look that’s been around since the middle of the 20th century.

Some designers say terrazzo tiles have become dated. Others are seeing a resurgence of terrazzo as a cool retro look for bathroom floors or backsplashes. To each their own.

6. Intricate Tiles

Speaking of floor tiles, the “going bold” trend in color and design includes flooring. White subway tiles have been extremely popular in the past. Now, geometric shapes appear to be all the rage.

Bulb-shaped Moroccan tiles, herringbone – or rectangular tiles at 90-degree angles to one another – were rising in popularity last year and are now much more in style.

7. Black Bathrooms and Kitchens

This increasingly popular, bold color choice is the exact opposite of the traditional shades of neutral white. Spa-inspired bathrooms and sleek modern kitchens are turning black in 2019.

Kesha Franklin of Halden Interiors calls this dark bathroom trend “sultry” and “indulgent” – so, maybe not the ideal style for families? But a kitchen with black features could accommodate a variety of lifestyles.

8. Light Wood Floors

By contrast, lighter shades of wood floors are becoming trendier for their ability to brighten a room. They reflect more light and can adapt to both casual and more formal rooms.

If you’re into this style, look for shades of birch, beachy white, light oak and other light woods.

9. Warmer, Darker Countertops

When you think of a nice countertop, you might picture marble with shades of white and grey. That’s a classic look. But many homeowners are choosing darker colors to give the kitchen more warmth.

Dark wood (in contrast to the light wood floors, maybe?), black marble, deep brown granite – these choices all fall in line with the idea that 2019 is a year for boldness.

10. Dog Showers

If your architectural design plan includes a mud room to keep the mess out of the rest of the house, and you have dogs, this feature makes sense.

We can incorporate about a 4’ x 4’ x 4’ tiled alcove just off that mudroom and plumb in a shower line. That way you can hose off your fur babies before heading for the family room together to relax.
